Renewed Interest
ČSH

After a period of decline, a turnaround has come -- interest in the adult rehabilitation retreat has grown. Sixteen people interested in rehabilitation gathered in Lednice in mid-May, filling the guesthouse to full capacity. The programme remained the same as in previous years, but it did bring certain innovations. Particularly in the quantity and the associated quality of the rehabilitation itself. There is a difference whether two or four physiotherapists attend to the participants. That is exactly what happened, as two additional therapists joined the two traditional rehabilitation specialists. They normally work at the Vráž spa, which has maintained close contact with the organisation for several years now, so we consider them highly qualified experts.
The Vráž management accommodated the organisation and allowed them to travel to Lednice, which benefits both sides. For the newcomers, this primarily means further professional growth, as they can consider the stay here as training in their field and thus ongoing professional development; for the clients, i.e. the organisation's members, it increases the number of much-needed minutes of actual rehabilitation.
The sanatorium in Vráž is today -- with the exception of specialised hospital rehabilitation departments linked primarily to orthopaedics -- the only centre in the country that specifically focuses on haemophilic joints. Its former narrow specialisation in treating neurological conditions is increasingly oriented towards post-operative rehabilitation, and the Prague Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion recommends, for example after a total joint replacement or other surgery, an immediate transfer from orthopaedics directly here. The local experts are top-notch not only in terms of physiotherapy itself, but also in dealing with other accompanying phenomena associated with bleeding manifestations.
For the organisation, the most important thing is that the Vráž physiotherapists have a great interest in such specialisation, they continuously educate themselves, and they are a great asset for the comprehensive care of the musculoskeletal system of people with hemophilia.
In addition to the specialised exercises, participants at the Lednice gathering could also use the swimming pool and other balneological services of the local youngest spa in the country. And because everyone stayed together in the same guesthouse with a large common room, every evening brought pleasant time in good company. They most certainly did not spend it talking about diseases, but rather with discussions about all sorts of things, or musical evenings with guitar and singing.
Many of the guests also brought their partners or children, so nobody was short of company. As in previous years, the organiser service worked at breakfast, lunch at a nearby restaurant, and with a creative approach to dinners. One time a giant steak tartare was prepared, another time there was a barbecue in the garden. One evening was arranged by an invited guest from a winery in nearby Valtice with a guided wine tasting. Wine was not only tasted but also discussed. Very knowledgeably, because they managed to find a person who can speak about wine in an extraordinarily interesting way. Not just about each sample, but about winemaking in general. About how wine is processed, how it is divided into individual categories, what different designations mean and what to expect from them. Everyone had heard or read a great deal about wine before, but such a comprehensive overview was certainly a first for all.
Throughout the retreat, project leader Michal Skořepa canvassed the opinions of those present on either staying in Lednice next year as well, or moving to some other suitable location. Opinions varied greatly, so no decision was made. If, for example, participants from previous years have any suggestions, they are welcome.
In any case, it was shown that such rehabilitation retreats make sense, and the organisation will continue to contribute to them financially. A week with full board and, most importantly, with highly specialised assistance from expert physiotherapists, for the amount that participants contribute, is definitely worthwhile.
