Rhodes 2021
03/08/2021Shortly after publishing the article about the trip to Greece, we received two more contributions from participants. It is not often that an event generates so many written responses, and since we value each one, we are presenting them in a new article. Adding them to the original one could risk them being overlooked. So this is not information about another trip, as a different article title might suggest.

Greece 2020
28/07/2021The title of this article is not entirely wrong. The original plan was to organise the trip last year. However, just like the Olympians, we had to wait, and with a touch of nervousness about what might still happen during the stay, we set off on 8 July to the Greek island of Rhodes. We spent a wonderful week there, which I do not need to describe at length, as the contributions from participants that follow this introduction speak for themselves about the great time we had.

Autumn Rehabilitation Retreat for Adults Took Place in the Třeboň Region
02/12/2020Due to spring government restrictions, we were forced to postpone the rehabilitation retreat for adult hemophilia patients to the turn of summer and autumn. Just before departure, we were once again worried whether everything would take place and under what conditions. In the end, however, almost everything worked out. The change of date and health complications of some registrants meant we did not fill the facility's capacity and did not beat last year's record in the number of participants. Even so, 40 people is a very respectable number. Nearly half were hemophilia or Von Willebrand patients. And if we include carriers in the count of hemophilia patients, we exceeded the halfway mark.

We Enjoyed Another Gala Evening at the Alcron
21/01/2020The event called the Gala Evening of the Czech Hemophilia Society and Hemojunior celebrated a lovely half-round anniversary. Perhaps even Katka Altmanova, who is the central figure behind the organisation of this event, did not believe it would see its fifth birthday. And given how well all the previous editions turned out, one can only wish her to reach the round anniversary. As the opening lines suggest, it was once again a very successful evening. There were more guests than originally anticipated, and the space where everything took place had to be reorganised. Those who were particularly looking forward to the delicacies of head chef Roman Paulus were greatly surprised to find no tables for the traditional buffets in the hall. They no longer fitted, and additional tables had to be added. But we did not miss out on the anticipated treats, as they were newly set up in the anteroom.

Jihlava Intergenerational Meeting — Not Just About News in Hemophilia Treatment
26/11/2019In November, the seventh meeting of the Czech Hemophilia Society and Hemojunior took place at the EA Business Hotel in Jihlava. The pleasant premises provided a suitable venue for gaining new enriching knowledge and social gatherings for exchanging experiences. The professional programme met our expectations as always — both the Friday lecture on lower limb axis correction by orthopaedist Petr Teyssler, accompanied by numerous photographs, and the personal experiences of young hemophilia patient Lovre Šuta with the myPKFIT mobile application received positive feedback. The varied programme continued with Saturday's thought-provoking lecture by psychologist Petra Bučková and physiotherapist Marie Katzerová on pain in coagulation disorders, the witty and encouraging talk by another psychologist David Bystrický, and last but not least, new information on hemophilia treatment options from haematologist Jan Blatný.

Adult Rehabilitation Retreat in Rokytnice, Orlické Hory
01/07/2019During the week from 18 to 25 May, another rehabilitation retreat for adult haemophilia patients took place. At this new venue too, we ran into capacity limitations and registration for the retreat had to be closed as early as February. For those who attended, however, Penzion Rokytenka offered a pleasant setting and a beautiful environment not only within the property grounds but also in the surrounding area. At this point, we are deciding whether to return here next year or take advantage of another option with a higher capacity. And how did we spend our week in Rokytnice? The contribution from Radim, who participated in the retreat for the first time, says it all. We thank him for his lines below and look forward to further gatherings together. Women and bleeding disorders
06/06/2019Women bleed too, and not just during menstruation. For women with a bleeding disorder, menstruation can turn into a nightmare, with heavy bleeding lasting more than seven days. And since their mothers, grandmothers, and sisters may have similar problems, they consider it "normal". Menstruation lasting longer than 7 days, or requiring sanitary products to be changed every two hours, may be a symptom of a bleeding disorder. In such a case, the woman should be examined at one of the haemophilia treatment centres. The historically first meeting of women with blood clotting disorders in Europe took place in recent days in Frankfurt am Main. The conference was organised by the European Haemophilia Consortium (EHC), and the Czech Hemophilia Society was represented by our long-standing active member Tereza Říhová.

Once Up, Once Down (Below)
31/05/2019On the last Saturday of April, it was time to descend into the depths of the Anselm mine at Landek Park in Ostrava-Petřkovice. Landek is a hill in Ostrava, and not just any hill. It is a world-renowned locality in terms of geology, archaeology, history, natural science, and mining. From early morning it was clear that something was being prepared in the local compressor hall. From almost every corner of the country, participants dressed in red gradually began to arrive to share a day full of discovery and fun. All of this in connection with World Haemophilia Day, which we commemorate every year on 17 April. The majority were naturally local members of the Czech Hemophilia Society and Hemojunior — those from Ostrava, including the physician and nurse from the Ostrava haemophilia centre.

All Generations of Haemophilia Patients Gathered in Jihlava
15/10/2018The intergenerational meeting of haemophilia patients and their closest ones holds a special place in our calendar. Nobody doubted that interest would be great again this year. The topics clearly invited it. Nearly one hundred and fifty participants filled the pleasant premises of the EA Business Hotel in Jihlava to learn about the latest developments in not only the haemophilia world. This time, the Society also made room for people with von Willebrand disease. Unfortunately, interest from members with this condition was almost nil. And so the entire programme focused on haemophilia-related topics.

20/04/2018Saturday 14 April was a much-anticipated day for members of the Society and Hemojunior. All this was traditionally made possible with the very generous support and cooperation of Novo Nordisk. Truly extraordinary experiences awaited at Techmania itself.

A Promising Trail in Zubří
06/03/2018One of the important roles of the Czech Hemophilia Society is undoubtedly the active involvement of young people with hemophilia in its activities. Children have their camps, adults have rehabilitation retreats. But what about those in between? As some children approach adulthood, camps become uninteresting to them — they have different priorities. And hoping that we will meet them again in a few years at the adult retreat? A naive idea. There is therefore a gap that we want to bridge together and give an opportunity to individuals who may be our hope for the future. Not only in organising retreats, but perhaps also in leading the society, which is an indispensable part of our hemophilia community.

Haemophilia Was the Topic in Hradec
04/12/2017'Hello, I am a carrier and my brother Lukas has haemophilia...' That is roughly how the event began on Saturday 2 December at the NaPLAVKA cafe & music bar in Hradec Kralove. It was not a meeting of an anonymous alcoholics' club, but a gathering on the topic of haemophilia. Since this rare disease causes bewilderment in our parts, we wanted to dispel certain misconceptions -- for example, what kind of pressure is placed on carriers when they decide to start a family, what it is like to give birth to a child with haemophilia, what it is like for children with haemophilia to grow up, and how the choice of education, hobbies, career, and partners is affected.

After a year, we once again gathered at Penzion Ohrada in Vísky near Letovice, where we had full facilities at our disposal. Accommodation with meals, a common room, rehabilitation rooms, a whirlpool, a swimming pool, and last but not least a conference hall with projection where we watched the Ice Hockey World Championship. The result of our hockey players was perhaps the only negative of the entire retreat. Its programme hardly needs a lengthy description any more. Rehabilitation and hydrotherapy were complemented by horse riding, excursions, a table tennis tournament, barbecues, and campfire cooking. More in the photo documentation.

Following the Tracks of the Oslavany Permons...
05/05/2017Just a few kilometres southwest of Brno lies an area that this year became a refuge for all those who decided to come and celebrate World Hemophilia Day. A day full of relaxation, discovery, fun, victories, and adventure awaited them. We're talking about the Permonium amusement park. It was created based on Oslavany legends on the grounds of the former Kukla coal mine, where six mysterious permons (mine spirits) have lived since ancient times - Starohorský, Bouchal, Zaklášterský, Vinohradský, Kovářova kopce, and Kopce Koblihu. The park is suitable not only for families with children, but visitors of all ages can find something enjoyable here. And so, once again after a year, traditionally thanks to Novo Nordisk, we had the opportunity to meet "our own" and experience an extraordinary day full of adventures and new discoveries.

Together again, albeit elsewhere
26/10/2016Many members and supporters of the association have grown accustomed to meeting each autumn at the "Together about Haemophilia" event. In recent years, everything took place at the Jezerka Hotel in Eastern Bohemia, but variety is the spice of life. In cooperation with long-standing partner Shire (formerly Baxalta, before that Baxter), CSH prepared a programme at a hotel by the Aquacentre in Čestlice – just outside Prague, right by the D1 motorway. The programme itself can hardly be reinvented; it is more about what fills the familiar framework. There is always an effort at renewal, but the foundation remains – delivering the latest information needed by everyone, keeping them up to date with developments and the outlook for care, and last but not least, answering as many questions as possible from participants.

Not only did we move from Lednice after five years, but for the first time in the history of these stays we also moved away from a spa town. The Ohrada guesthouse in Vísky u Letovic was to replace it. It offers everything we need for our purposes, including meeting rooms, rehabilitation facilities, a swimming pool, and whirlpools. Including accommodation all under one roof. Comfort thus increased not only for the organizers, who did not have to prepare breakfast every morning, but also for participants, as they no longer had to walk anywhere. There is a difference whether two or four physiotherapists attend to the participants. That is exactly what happened, as two additional therapists joined the two traditional rehabilitation specialists. The second part of the celebrations then took place on Saturday 26 April, naturally with members of both the Czech Hemophilia Society and Hemojunior in attendance. It paid off -- the weather was very generous and after a long, persistent winter, it showed a friendly face to both sailors and passengers.

24/02/2013This year marks the thirteenth time that the "Slovak Hemophilia Association" (Slovenské hemofilické združenie) organised a formal hemophilia ball. This event, with a tradition spanning over a decade, aims primarily to bring members together in a relaxed, non-work atmosphere and foster friendly meetings among all supporters of Slovak hemophilia patients. Despite the unfavourable flu season, over 60 attendees participated in the ball, including hemophilia patients themselves, parents, friends of hemophilia patients, and those who simply enjoy the atmosphere and organisation of this event.

Ondrášův Dvůr Lived the Olympics
08/08/2012On a weekend in mid-July, counsellors, doctors, a nurse, physiotherapists, and most importantly 42 children gathered for the eighth time at the Beskid Mountains facility Ondrášův Dvůr to spend the traditional two weeks together at the summer hemophilia camp. This year's Olympic Games in London were a major event, and so our camp-wide game also had an Olympic theme. This was reflected in nearly every activity at the camp -- the counsellors represented the Olympic Committee, the children went to train at the training centre, health issues were handled by the sports physician, and carbohydrates, fats, and proteins were replenished by the athletes at the nutrition centre.

The First Swallow Flew from Brno
04/03/2012The new programme of regional workshops for adults began yesterday. In Brno, a dozen South Moravian association members gathered at the Avanti Hotel to take advantage of the new opportunities. Everything was made possible thanks to Bayer, which covers all costs of the regional workshops. The four-star hotel in almost the very centre of Brno was the right choice. Participants had two large salons at their disposal - one for lectures and discussion, the other for rehabilitation. In addition, there was a sauna and whirlpool in the relaxation centre.
